An unprecedented number of sheep have been attacked by marauding dogs this year. Attacks have occurred in every county in the Republic, according to sheep farmer Mr Laurence Fallon, from Co Roscommon.
Mr Fallon, who is also chairman of the Irish Farmers' Association's national sheep committee, joined in an appeal from the Minister of State for Agriculture, Mr Liam Aylward, to dog-owners to keep their animals under control.
"I have travelled extensively through the country this year, and I have reports of sheep worrying and sheep kills by dogs from every county."
He said the the largest so far was in Co Wicklow, where 80 ewes were killed or had to be destroyed after an attack by dogs.
Mr Aylward drew attention to the stiff penalties provided under the law for negligent dog- owners. He pointing out that the owners may also be found liable for damages and costs in a civil action.
