A DUNDALK GP, Dr Mary Grehan, has been selected by the Progressive Democrats to contest the Louth constituency seat at the next general election.

Dr Grehan is a founding member of the Associations of General Practitioners which led a successful High Court challenge against the withholding tax last, year.

The association was opposed to the tax on the grounds that it was a form of double taxation which caused cash flow problems for family doctors and other, professionals.

Dr Grehan has also carried out surveys over the past decade, highlighting the worrying level of abnormal health problems in the Dundalk area which may be linked to emissions from the Sellafield nuclear plant in Cumbria.

Dr Grehan said that ifs elected she would "bring the public's environmental health concerns to the floor of the Dail. All along the east coast, and elsewhere in the country, there is a real fear about what the environment is doing to, people's health. These concerns must be addressed on the national political stage".

Dr Grehan said people in Co Louth had not benefited from the State's "so called economic boom" and that workers there were short changed by the Government's short sighted tax policies.

"Unemployment in the country is now higher than it was when this rainbow [coalition] came to power nearly two years ago. Failure to tackle the lengthening dole queues is this Government's greatest failure. It is also guilty of failing to tackle the crime crisis which has terrified millions of innocent citizens," she said.
