Democratic Left has postponed its annual conference until December in anticipation of a successful conclusion of its merger negotiations with the Labour Party, writes Denis Coghlan, Chief Political Correspondent.
A meeting of the party's executive council at the weekend agreed that its annual conference, scheduled for November 14th, be postponed until December to allow negotiations with the Labour Party to be concluded.
Last month's campaigning in the Cork South Central by-election was said to have delayed the programme of negotiations.
If agreement is reached between the negotiating teams, executive meetings of both parties will have to approve the outcome and refer it for consideration by special party conferences.
There was "a desire to get the whole thing finished by Christmas, if that is at all possible", a Democratic Left spokesman said.
