The Arizona Diamondbacks scored two dramatic runs in the ninth and final inning last night to beat the New York Yankees 3-2 and bring the Diamondbacks their first World Series title.
Arizona won Major League Baseball's best-of-seven final four games to three, claiming the crown in only their fourth season.
The Diamondbacks denied the Yankees a fourth consecutive crown and fifth in six years, bringing an end to the dynasty started in 1996 under Joe Torre by snapping New York's 11-series playoff winning streak.
Arizona's cause looked bleak, trailing 2-1 entering the last inning against normally untouchable New York relief pitcher Mariano Rivera with the Yankees needing only three outs for their fourth title in a row.
But 13-year veteran Mark Grace singled, catcher Damian Miller reached on an error by Rivera, pinch-hitter Jay Bell reached on a fielder's choice and Womack doubled to right field to bring home the equalizing run.
Rivera hit Craig Counsell to load the bases and Gonzalez, Arizona's top power hitter with 57 home runs this season, slapped a single to centerfield that touched off a celebration before a sellout crowd of 49,589.
