Salthill Properties Ltd, owned by Co Galway-born businessman, Mr Brian Cunningham, and his wife, Marian, yesterday withdrew a controversial application to build 173 apartments in Salthill.

The development, which would have been seven storeys with a further two floors underground for parking, included plans for a health club. The company said it had decided to drop the proposal, for a site currently occupied by the Grand Hotel, the Banba Hotel and some private houses, because of local opposition to the £24 million-plus project.
