An Army bomb disposal team has made safe a number of detonators at the Lisheen mine in Co Tipperary this morning.

The team was called in by gardaí after an explosion killed one man and seriously injured another at the mine on Wednesday.

A spokesman for the Army said a number of detonators were removed and destroyed in three controlled explosions.

The team arrived at the mine at 8.30pm last night and the scene was declared safe at 3.30am this morning.

The victim of Wednesday’s explosion was named locally as Joe Fallon, who was in his 40s.

He is originally from the nearby village of Two Mile Borris but was living in Callan, Co Kilkenny.

His injured colleague, who is in his 50s, was taken to Cork University Hospital for treatment.

Investigations were launched by local gardaí and the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) immediately after the incident.

Lisheen Mine is located between the villages of Moyne and Templetuohy and is one of the largest producers of zinc concentrates in Europe.

Now in its second decade of operations, it employs about 370 people.
