Multinational electronics firm Seagate Technology will close its doors at its Limavady facility in Co Derry for the last time today with the loss of nearly 1,000 full-time and part-time jobs.

The group, which produces nickel-plated aluminium substrates at the plant, announced last year that it had made the decision to transfer its substrate operation from Limavady to Malaysia because of lower operating costs.

The company has been operating at Limavady, Co Derry, since July 1997, and will close today with the loss of 927 jobs.

The company is retaining its other Derry plant at Springtown where it recently announced plans to invest £120 million (€151 million) over the next two years.

The investment will be directed into new equipment, research and development, infrastructure and IT systems.
