A place in the Guinness Book of Recordsis being sought for a Derry police station as the least used in any city in the world..

The Pat Finucane Centre revealed today that it has put the PSNI Rosemount base in Derry forward for the dubious award, as part of its campaign to have the base shut down.

Just one member of the public a month has called at Rosemount over the past year.

PSNI district commander Mr Richard Russell confirmed at the last meeting of the District Policing Partnership in Derry that only 12 people had visited the station between October 2003 and October 2004.

It was also revealed that it cost in the region of £275,000 sterling a year to keep the station open every day.

Residents of the Lower Creggan and Rosemount areas have long campaigned for the removal of a 100-foot high surveillance mast inside Rosemount - one of only two PSNI bases in Derry's west bank area.

A spokesman for the Pat Finucane Centre said that there was a serious side to their bid to get the base in the Guinness Book of Records.

"Rosemount is a blot on the landscape and is regarded as an intrusion. At present health and education boards are struggling to find funding for things that we really need - special needs education, more beds in hospitals, the list goes on," he said. "Meanwhile £275,000 is wasted each year on a facility that no one wants or needs."

The Police Service said closure of Rosemount was "under consideration", but that there was no timescale for a decision.
