Derby today sacked manager Colin Todd just over three months after appointing him as boss at Pride Park.
Earlier today, Derby’s Italian striker Fabrizio Ravanelli denied he was on the verge of taking over as manager, but admitted he would consider the offer if it ever came his way.
The Rams were beaten 2-1 by Aston Villa at the weekend, leaving them second from bottom of the Premiership and entrenched in a relegation battle.
At the start of January, Derby were dumped out of the FA Cup in the third round by Third Division Bristol Rovers, who won 3-1 at Pride Park.
Chief executive Keith Loring said on the club's website, www.dcfc.co.uk: "The decision made by the chairman and board of directors was unanimous and Colin has been aware the chairman was not happy with the way things have been going."
"Everyone at Derby County remains committed to helping this club stay in the Premiership and with 16 games to play the overwhelming feeling is that we need a change of direction and new impetus."
Ravanelli, meanwhile, insists he is focused solely on playing for the Rams.
"No one has contacted me from the club, but I have seen it in the press," said the Derby striker.
However, the 33-year-old refused to rule out any possibilities.
"At this time I only think about being a player at Derby County, but if that opportunity arises in the future I will evaluate it," he said.
Ravanelli has scored 10 goals for the Rams since his summer move from Lazio but he has not been able to lift the club out of the doldrums.
But the 'White Feather' has frequently expressed his commitment and loyalty and has already spoken of his desire to have a role at the club after his playing days are over.
"I feel well in England. Since the first day at Derby they have helped me, and I feel at home," he said.
"I hope that I will stay here many years."
