Col John Brennock, a former director of the Army School of Music, has died in St Vincent's Hospital, Dublin, after a short illness.
From Dungarvan, Co Waterford, Col Brennock joined the Army in 1936 and was commissioned in 1940, serving mainly with the Army No 1 and No 2 bands. In 1948, he was appointed assistant director of the Army School of Music, becoming director in 1971. One of the longest-serving Army officers, he retired after 45 years' service.
He was musical conductor at the Papal ceremonies in the Phoenix Park in 1979. In 1982, he was presented with a Papal decoration in recognition of "fine Christian leadership by word and example to all in the Army School of Music during his career".
He is survived by his wife, Clora, and sons, Mark, a journalist with The Irish Times, and Paul.
The removal of the remains takes place today, arriving at St Joseph's Church, Glasthule, Co Dublin, at 6 p.m. The funeral is tomorrow after 11 a.m. Mass to Shanganagh Cemetery.
