The Democratic Left leader, Mr Proinsins De Rossa, said in Belfast yesterday that his party rejects the politics of "them" and "us" and is committed to new political structures which could free the people of the North from the grip of division and violence.

Mr De Rossa announced that resolutions on Northern Ireland will feature heavily in the party's Annual Delegate Conference which takes place in Dun Laoghaire this weekend.

The conference will debate motions calling for the immediate restoration of the IRA ceasefire, reform of policing, the transfer of prisoners from British jails and an end to so called punishment beatings.

Mr De Rossa said there could be no change in the constitutional status of Northern Ireland without the consent of a majority of the people in the North.
