The Spanish prime minister, Mr Jose Maria Aznar has called on Spaniards to take to the streets across the country tomorrow in protest at the bomb attacks in Madrid and vowed that his government will relentlessly pursue those responsible for them.

In a televised address after an emergency cabinet meeting this morning, Mr Aznar said that March 11th "had taken its place in the history of infamy" and  said the "criminals who have caused so many deaths will be arrested, they will be tried and sentenced by the courts"

"There are no negotiations possible or desirable with these assassins who have so often sown death through all of Spain," he said.

"Only with firmness can we put a stop to attacks the victims were killed simply for being Spanish.

"We will succeed in finishing off the terrorist band," he said, employing the term used by the government to refer to ETA, but not naming it.
