London - The man accused of murdering the BBC broadcaster Jill Dando "told lie after lie" when interviewed by police after his arrest, the Old Bailey heard yesterday. Mr Orlando Pownall, continuing his closing speech for the prosecution, alleged that Mr Barry George had played cat-and-mouse with the police when questioned.

Mr George had not mentioned in his witness statement that he returned to an advice centre two days after Miss Dando's murder, said Mr Pownall. The prosecution alleges he went to the offices of Hammersmith and Fulham Action for Disability to establish a false alibi.

Mr George (41), of Fulham, west London, has denied murdering the TV presenter on April 26th, 1999. Miss Dando was shot through the head outside her home in Gowan Avenue, Fulham.
