An Irish dancing instructor who the High Court found to have sexually abused a pupil over seven years in the 1980s has had his registration with the commission for Irish dancing in Ireland cancelled.
An Coimisiún le Rincí Gaelacha said Michael Quigley’s registration had been cancelled “with immediate effect”. Last week the Supreme Court ruled that Quigley (68), Barnhill Park, Letterkenny, Co Donegal, could be named after the High Court ordered him to pay €400,000 to the victim.
Mr Quigley had denied the abuse claims and the High Court was told last week an appeal against the award was also to be lodged.
His victim Dana Doherty (42), a teacher from Letterkenny, had asked that he be publicly identified. Her solicitor Brian Gill said she hoped Irish dancing authorities would ensure all steps were taken to protect children in their care.
