The key witness in the Damilola Taylor murder trial in Britain halted proceedings for a second day by announcing she was going home.

Just 20 minutes into her second day in the Old Bailey witness box, the 14-year-old stormed out of the courtroom, saying: "You know what? I'm going home".

The girl had grown more impatient, tutting when asked to look at photographs and maps of the area in which the alleged attack took place.

Yesterday, the trial had to be halted when she pleaded to go home, having clashed with a defence barrister who had suggested she had lied about her "eyewitness" account of the alleged attack on Damilola (10).

She had given evidence for two-and-a-half hours when she asked to leave after saying she did not like the way Ms Courtenay Griffiths QC was speaking to her.

The prosecution says she is the only witness to the killing of Damilola who bled to death after being stabbed with a broken beer bottle two hundred yards from his home on the North Peckham Estate, south London, in November 2000.

Two brothers aged 16, their 17-year-old friend and a 14-year-old friend deny murder, manslaughter and assault with intent to rob.

Before leaving the courtroom, the girl had told how she had seen four youths gathered around a little boy and said she thought they were robbing him.

She claims she was hidden behind a Fiat Punto across the street from them, where she spoke to a Scottish man with a camera. The girl said he had taken photos of the estate while they talked but said she did not think the four youths had seen them.
