Former Open champion John Daly stormed into contention at the German Masters in Cologne this afternoon.
Daly carded a brilliant third round 64, just one shot outside the course record at Gut Larchenhof, to move within striking distance of the lead.
The American began the day seven shots off the pace set by home favourite Bernhard Langer after rounds of 71, 67 left him on six under par.
But after five birdies in his last six holes Daly had matched Langer's round of 64 yesterday and was suddenly back in the frame for a German double and the £278,000 first prize.
Daly had not won a tournament since his Open triumph at St Andrews in 1995 until his victory in the BMW International Open in Munich a month ago.
Daly, on 14 under par, had set the early clubhouse target and was within two shots of the lead, Langer picking up three birdies on the front nine.
Sweden's Fredrik Jacobson was also on 14 under playing alongside Langer with four players another shot back as the field took advantage of almost ideal scoring conditions.
Mansfield's Greg Owen, Welshman Ian Woosnam, South African Roger Wessels and France's Marc Farry were all on 13 under par with Dubliner Padraig Harrington and Scotland's Gary Orr among those another shot adrift.
