Rome -Mr Massimo D'Alema yesterday started work on forming a new government only two days after resigning as prime minister following weeks of sniping from rivals in the ruling coalition.
President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi summoned Mr D'Alema to ask to him to try to form a new administration after Mr D'Alema spent most of the day in talks with leaders of Italian political parties. Mr D'Alema indicated he wanted to relaunch an overhauled centre-left government based on a strengthened and more homogenous coalition.
