Leaders of the two biggest Czech political parties agreed that the country should hold an early election in October following a no-confidence vote in the centre-right cabinet, news agency CTK said today.

It quoted leftist opposition Social Democrat leader Jiri Paroubek as saying there was an agreement on the date, but gave no details. Regular polls are due in mid-2010.

The agreement follows a no-confidence vote in the minority cabinet led by Mirek Topolanek, which forced his resignation on Thursday. The parties have to agree on who will form a new cabinet leading the country to the election.
