Nicosia - The plight of a Greek Cypriot child suffering from leukaemia and in desperate need of a bone marrow transplant has transcended political barriers on the divided island of Cyprus.

Greek Cypriots have turned out in their thousands this week to give blood samples in an unprecedented outpouring of sympathy for the boy, who needs an operation within the next month. Turkish Cypriot organisations moved by efforts to save six-year-old Andreas Vassiliou have contacted the UN mission on Cyprus in an effort to help.
