Some 2,500 people took part in a 6km cycle around Dublin today as part of Bike to Work Day.

As part of National Bike Week, cyclists took to the city's streets this afternoon in a leisurely 30 minute cycle.

The lunchtime bike to work event began at Grand Canal Square in Dublin Docklands at 1pm.

Last year, 1,250 people attended the free event, which is a Dublin City Council initiative.

There were competitions for best dressed male and female cyclists, best company and market stalls with post-event entertainment.

Minister of State for Transport Alan Kelly, who led the event, said the Government are in support of getting more people pedalling. "Over 200,000 people drive to work who have a journey of 4km or less. Events like this are about encouraging people to get out of their cars and cycle to work."

The event is one of many around the country celebrating National Bike Week, which takes place from June 16th to 24th.
