The High Court in Waterford has approved a settlement of £175,000 with costs in favour of Mrs Helen Kelly, whose late husband, Joe, was killed in a cycling accident on August 11th, 1991. He was a brother of cyclist Sean Kelly.

Mrs Kelly, of Woodland Heights, Carrickbeg, Carricki on Suir, had brought a claim for damages against Mr Billy O'Callaghan, Feddans, Rathcormack, Co Waterford, the driver of a car which was in collision with Mr Kelly's bike.

The court was told the dead man, aged 37 at the time, had cycled more than 100 miles with others on a "cruise" in the Comeragh Mountains when the accident happened at Seskin Hill, Carrick on Suir. Mrs Kelly, who was following the cycle "cruise" with a group of other wives, came upon the accident scene with their daughter, then an infant of 13 weeks.
