FANS OF The Cure have been left staring at their shoes today after the cancellation of a unique live gig that was to be broadcast in Ireland and across Europe tonight.
The ageing “misery guts” are headlining the Shockwaves NME Awards Big Gig 2009 in London’s O2 arena but the show was also to be broadcast live on cinema screens across Europe, much to the delight of Cure fans.
The band played the Oxegen festival in 2004 and in Dublin’s Point in June 1996. Cinemas Movies@Swords, Movies@ Dundrum and sister company SGC Dungarvan were to play host to hordes of the band’s black-clad faithful at 9.30pm tonight, but Universal notified cinemas last Friday that the satellite link-up had been cancelled.
A spokeswoman for the cinemas said approximately 150 cinema tickets at €20 each for the shows had sold out quickly after going on sale on Monday of last week.
She said no reason was given for the cancellation.
The spokeswoman said they had previous broadcast live opera from New York, including Madama Butterfly, but The Cure gig would have been one of the first live rock gigs to be broadcast live in an Irish cinema.
