Crushed recycled glass from bottle banks and pubs has been used to resurface a section of road in Tallow, Co Waterford.

Crushed recycled glass from bottle banks and pubs has been used to resurface a section of road in Tallow, Co Waterford.

Glass has been used successfully in road construction projects in Britain, but this is believed to be the first project of its kind in Ireland.

Waterford County Council collects around 30 tonnes of glass each month from recycling centres.

To find a market for the glass, the council agreed a deal with Roadstone Provinces and Sam Shire Recycling to use crushed glass in road base macadam.

The macadam contains about 10 per cent recycled glass and can be used on smaller roads and as an underlayer in higher quality roads.
