Bomb-disposal experts carried out a controlled explosion on a “crude but viable” device which was discovered in an apartment in Co Clare yesterday.

The apartment complex and a town square were evacuated after the device was found by gardaí in Shannon. The alarm was raised at about 12.30pm while officers were carrying out a routine patrol at the Kincora apartment complex in Shannon Town Centre.

The Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal team based at Collins Barracks in Cork inspected the device, and it was decided to carry out a controlled explosion.
