More than 50 per cent of all calls and 60 per cent of arrests so far this year were drug-related, according to Crimestoppers, the national freephone crime-fighting service.

The service, set up by the Garda Siochana and the Dublin Chamber of Commerce, recorded 139 arrests from anonymous tip-offs up to August.

"One call led to the seizure of £100,000 worth of cannabis," said the Crimestoppers director, Mr Ciaran Conlon.

Other "significant results" included arrests for robbery, handling stolen goods and possession of firearms. It also recorded:

Almost £250,000 worth of drugs recovered in total including heroin, cocaine, cannabis and ecstasy.

Property valued over £25,000 returned to owners.

More than 1,750 "useful" calls from the public.

Firearms recovered, brothels closed down.

Information on cases involving other serious crimes.

"The message remains the same for the public," said Mr Conlon.
