Three arrested over bank holiday street assaults in Ashbourne

Gardai have arrested three men in connection with a series of violent incidents in Ashbourne, Co Meath over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

Six people, including one woman, sustained injuries when they were assaulted by a group of men from Dublin in the early hours of Monday, August 1st last.

The suspects had been drinking in the town on Sunday night into Monday morning, and just before 3.30am they became involved in a number of altercations.

The men were accused of assaulting a number of women, and when three other men intervened to stop the attack they were set upon.

While the four attackers fled the scene on foot, four of the injured people were taken to hospital, one of the victims suffering serious head injuries including a fractured skull.

Gardaí launched several public appeals for assistance with their investigation and, having been aided by local people and also studied CCTV footage of the violence, they identified a number of suspects.

On Thursday morning, three men were arrested in Dublin’s north inner city in an operation involving local gardaí backed by members of the Emergency Response Unit.

The three suspects have been detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and can be held for up to 24 hours without charge.
