IIEA meeting on 'Europe we need'

Professor Timothy Garton Ash will speak on The Europe We Need, on Tuesday June 23rd at 12.45pm at the Institute of International and European Affairs, North Great Georges St, Dublin.

Professor Garton Ash is Professor of European Studies in the University of Oxford and the author of eight books on the transformation of Europe.

The IIEA is also organising a round-table meeting on prospects for EU-US-Russian co-operation at 12.45pm on Friday June 19th, also at its headquarters in Dublin, at which Dr Fraser Cameron, director of the EU Russia Centre in Brussels, will speak. See www.iiea.com.

Prison reform open forum

The Irish Penal Reform Trust will host an open forum entitled Re-imagining the Role of Prison in Irish Society on Thursday 18th June, which will be addressed by Professor Fergus McNeill of the University of Glasgow and Professor Andrew Coyle of Kings College London.

It will be preceded by the trust’s agm.

The trust has also announced the re-launch of its website at www.iprt.ie, which carries more information on the forum.

Philanthropy summer school

The Centre for Non-profit Management in Trinity College is organising a Non-profit Summer School in the Irish Management Institute, Sandyford tomorrow, June 16th, and Wednesday 17th to discuss philanthropy in Ireland. Speakers will include Fintan O'Toole of The Irish Times, Brendan Keenan of the Irish Independent, Niall Crowley, former chief executive of the Equality Authority, John Healy of the Centre for Non-Profit Management, Colm O'Gorman of Amnesty International and Kieran Murphy of the Vincent de Paul Society. The cost of the summer school, including dinner, is €250 (students €125), and a place can be booked at nonprofit@tcd.ie

Conference on justice sector

A one-day international conference on evaluating the justice sector will take place in St Patrick’s College, Maynooth on June 26th.

The conference will be attended by inter- governmental bodies, justice sector bodies, development officials and NGOs. See www.ihrnetwork.org.

Importance of making a will

A new book on making a will has just been published by John G Murphy and Jason Dunne, solicitors and authors of a previous book, the Inheritance and Succession Guide.

The new book, Make Your Will, points out that as soon as people have property of any value, have children or enter a long-term relationship they should make a will, and guides people in a clear and jargon-free way. Published by Liberties Press, the book costs €9.99.
