Conference on law and the environment
The law department in UCC will host a conference on law and the environment on Thursday, April 23rd, with a panel of lawyers and environmental professionals.
They include Prof Sharon Turner, of QUB; Conor Linehan, of William Fry solicitors; Charles George QC; Ronan Kennedy, NUI Galway; Dr Ronan Long, NUI Galway; Dr Brian Jack, QUB; and Dr Owen McIntyre, UCC.
The conference will be addressed by the Minister for the Environment, John Gormley.

Law student colloquium at TCD
The law school of Trinity College Dublin will hold the inaugural Law Student Colloquium on Saturday, April 4th next.
The aim of the colloquium is to give law students the opportunity to present papers and engage in peer review with a view to encouraging legal research.
Panels will discuss papers on a variety of issues, from both undergraduate and postgraduate students, that will include constitutional law, criminal law, international law and tort.
The colloquium is jointly sponsored by Allen and Overy and Matheson Ormsby Prentice.

DCU law degree recognised
The new law degree in DCU, the BCL (law and society), has been recognised by the Honorable Society of Kings Inns as an “approved law degree”, meaning that graduates can sit the entrance examination for the Kings Inns BL degree.
The BCL (Law and Society) aims to provide students with a deeper understanding of law and legal issues, grounded in the social realities which both influence the law and are influenced by the law.
This degree will cover the traditional core law modules such as contract law, constitutional law, criminal law and property law, but students will also have the opportunity to study modules such as Work, Employment and Society; Law and Body Politics; and Healthcare Law and Society.
NI human rights body celebrates
As part of a programme of activities celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission, its annual conference on April 20th next will focus on Humans Without Rights: the impact of immigration law, policy and practice.
It will take place in the Hilton Hotel, Belfast from 9.30am to 4pm, and lunch will be served.
The commission will launch its new investigation report The UK Border Agency: Powers of Detention at the conference and a panel of local, national and international experts will explore current debates on immigration law, policy and practice.
Mediation course for family lawyers
The Dublin Solicitors Bar Association has launched a mediation course for family lawyers.
Mediation is an alternative to court procedures, and the course is designed to train family lawyers to mediate while recognising that parties negotiate in the shadow of the law.
The first two courses are in May and June, and they will be followed by two courses in September.
