Conference on issue of access to justice
The Bar Council is hosting a conference entitled Access to Justice: For Some or For All? on Saturday next, May 15th, from 9.30am to 1pm, at the Kings Inns, Dublin 7.
The keynote speaker is former president of Ireland and former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mary Robinson, followed by a panel discussion chaired by Turlough O’Donnell SC, and featuring Noeline Blackwell of Free Legal Advice Centres (Flac), Damien Peelo (Irish Traveller Movement) and Father Peter McVerry SJ.
Symposium on gender in Cork
The Centre for Criminal Justice and Human Rights in UCC is holding a symposium, Towards a Gender Recognition Framework for Ireland, on Friday, May 14th, in Brookfield Health Sciences Complex, UCC, Room G10, from 10.30am to 2pm.

Queen’s lecture on rights to fair trial
The annual lecture of the Institute of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the School of Law, Queen’s University Belfast, will take place on May 20th in Room 121, Lanyon Building, Queens University, from 5.30 to 6.30pm.
Entitled “Reconceptualising Fair Trial Rights for the 21st century”, the lecture will be delivered by Prof John Jackson, School of Law, University College Dublin.

Rights commission seeks interns
The Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission (NIHRC) is seeking applications from suitably qualified candidates for three internships during the summer, on dates to be agreed, for a minimum commitment of two months.
The commission welcomes applications from outside Northern Ireland and from post-graduates. The closing date for applications is Monday, May 10th, 2010.

Equality chief’s memoir published
A book by the former chief executive of the Equality Authority, Niall Crowley, will be launched by Labour Party leader Eamon Gilmore in Waterstones, Dawson Street, Dublin, this Thursday, from 6-8pm.
Empty Promises: Bringing the Equality Authority to Heeldetails the experiences of Mr Crowley, who resigned in protest at the authority's budget being almost halved.
