City seminar on law of surrogacy

The Family Lawyers Association are organising a seminar on the law of surrogacy on April 21st in the Distillery Building, Church Street, Dublin at 5.30pm, with registration at 5pm.

The keynote speaker will be international expert John Weltman, co-founder of Circle Surrogacy in the US, who will speak on surrogacy laws in that jurisdiction. UCC’s Dr Deirdre Madden will speak on the question “Does surrogacy have a future in Ireland?” Bronagh O’Hanlon will speak on the law as it affects surrogacy, and Dr Gerard Byrne will discuss the psychological challenge of surrogacy.

The event will be chaired by Mr Justice Henry Abbott.

Criminal law title a useful reference

Clarus Press has just published Criminal Law in Ireland: Cases and Commentary, by Liz Campbell, Shane Kilcommins and Catherine O’Sullivan.

Published in paperback, the book runs to 1,112 pages and costs €99.

Director for ICEL

Andrew Beck BL will be stepping down as Director of the Irish Centre for European Law (ICEL) in June. Accordingly, ICEL seeks an experienced European Law expert to take responsibility for ICELs conference programme and for the management of ICEL. Further details are available at www.icel.ie.

UCD hosts Milosevic Hague prosecutor

Sir Geoffrey Nice QC, lead prosecutor of former Serbian leader Slobodan Milosevic, will address the UCD Law Society on “War Crimes Trials: Should We Bother?” on Wednesday next, March 24th, at 7:00pm in Theatre Q.

Arbitration posts

Joe Behan, head of Behan Dispute Resolution, has been elected world president of the 12,000-strong Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) for the year 2010. He works in arbitration, mediation and conciliation, in Ireland and internationally.

Ciaran Fahy, a consulting chartered engineer and forensic engineer, has been elected chairman of the Dispute Resolution Board at the Institution of Engineers of Ireland. He also practises in all aspects of alternative dispute resolution: mediation, arbitration and conciliation.

Mediation workshop for the workplace

The first in a series of mediation workshops on effective communications, organised by Mediation Northside, will take place in the Northside Community Law Centre, Northside Civic Centre, Bunratty Road, Coolock, Dublin 17, on Friday April 16th, from 10am to 4pm.
