Man charged with robbery of elderly pensioner

A 23-year-old man has appeared in court charged in connection with the robbery of an 85-year-old man in Limerick city last week.

Martin Morey, with an address at McGarry House, St Alphonsus Street, Limerick, is charged with robbing the pensioner of a black wallet containing €80 in cash and one black flip mobile phone valued at €50 at Roxboro Shopping Centre on July 30 last, contrary to Section 14 of the Theft and Fraud Offences Act.

Detective Gardai Micheal Dunne, of Roxboro Garda Station, gave evidence of arresting and formally charging the accused, who was arrested at Collins Avenue in Limerick on Monday.

The court heard the 23-year-old made no reply when he was formally charged at Roxboro Garda Station in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Solicitor Sarah Ryan was assigned to represent the accused whom the court heard is in receipt of social welfare.

Sargent John Moloney said the State would be objecting to bail but Ms Ryan said her client was reserving his position on bail.

The court heard that there were no directions available from the Director of Public Prosecutions yet.

Judge John King remanded the accused in custody until August 12th next, when he is due to appear before the same court again.

Ms Ryan said she would inform the state if she intended to apply for bail on that occasion.
