A crew member aboard the Swansea-Cork ferry service was airlifted to hospital overnight on Monday after he was injured by a safety door on the MV Julia. The 45-year-old Polish man sustained a suspected broken pelvis after he became trapped by the internal watertight hydraulic door.

The incident took place as the ferry was sailing to Cork. The MV Julia was 10 miles south of St Anne’s Head in Wales when the accident took place. Crew contacted Milford Haven Coast Guard, who notified medical advisers at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

Phil Jones, chief executive of Fastnet Line which operates the ferry, said an internal investigation was under way.
