The Irish League of Credit Unions and is seeking a meeting with the Minister for Finance over proposed changes to legislation governing credit unions.

The legislation, if enacted, would bring the credit unions under the control of the board of Irish Financial Services Regulatory Authority (IFSRA). The League's President Mr John O'Regan, hopes to discuss the proposed new single financial regulatory authoritywith Minister McCreevy.

The league is concerned that changes proposed by the Minister would undermine the volunteer and not-for profit status of credit unions.

Delegates voted to lobby politicians at a special general meeting held by the league on the matter in Galway, yesterday. Delegates also decided not to proceed with the introduction of a new funding system for the League in 2003.
