Flights were suspended at Birmingham airport today after a light aircraft carrying human organs for transplant crashed on arrival injuring two men on board, West Midlands Police and the airport said.

The crash involved a two-seater private Cessna light aircraft which police said was believed to have had a "hard landing" and subsequently caught fire.

One of the men was seriously injured and was airlifted to hospital. The second man suffered back pain and flash burns, and was also taken to hospital.

"The plane was carrying human organs for transplant -- as soon as the casualties were secure, these organs were also rescued and under police escort have been taken to their destination," police said.
