Coventry manager Gordon Strachan hopes to complete the £5 million signing of Welsh international John Hartson from Wimbledon by the weekend as he bids to cure his side's chronic lack of goalscoring.

Hartson will form an all-Welsh strike partnership with £6.5 million club record signing Craig Bellamy after Coventry made an improved offer for the 25-year-old.

City have shown improved form in recent weeks and are currently unbeaten in five league and cup matches, but a failure to find the net is undermining that revival and they have scored just 21 goals in 22 matches.

The midlanders have struggled in attack since the departure in the summer of last season's two top scorers, Robbie Keane and Gary McAllister, but hope Hartson will provide the remedy.

Strachan said: "We've been going through a rehabilitation period but I've been repeating myself after every game in the last few weeks in that we've been having gilt-edged chances and have just not been taking them.

"A lot is going right with our game now compared to a couple of months ago when we were not playing well but we just can't get the ball in the back of the net.

"Our only problem now is scoring goals and the longer that goes on the more pressure there is on other areas as well, notably the defence.

"We've been getting into very good positions but have been snatching at things and rushing them. It's not just the strikers but other players as well.

"If we could only relax a bit we could score a lot more but that is difficult in our position."

Strachan is understood to have originally offered Wimbledon £2.5 million plus out-of-favour defender Richard Shaw in exchange for Hartson.

But the First Division side will be more happy with a deal which sees them getting £3million up-front plus the rest in installments.

Coventry hope to have Hartson, who has seen moves to Tottenham and Rangers fail on medical grounds over the past year, signed in time for Saturday's Premiership clash at Newcastle. - PA
