The trial of two men for the IRA murder of a Newry postal worker, Mr Frank Kerr, heard yesterday that they were arrested within an hour of him being shot while trying to foil a £130,000 robbery in November 1994.

Belfast Crown Court heard that Mr Declan McComish (28), from Regina Park, Jonesboro, Co Down, and Mr Kevin Donegan (39), of Bayview, also in Jonesboro, were arrested outside the village of Meigh, in a car from which a third man escaped. In the car, police found a blood stained postal worker's uniform, a CB type radio and a black bin bag.

An RUC constable said he gave chase to the third man, but was encumbered by his body armour and the suspect's head start. Despite him firing two aimed shots, the man escaped.

The trial continues today.
