The Court of Criminal Appeal is to hear an application by Paul Ward for leave to appeal against his conviction for the murder of journalist Veronica Guerin.

Ward (34), from Crumlin, with an address at Walkinstown Road, Dublin, was jailed for life on November 27th last year after he was found guilty of Ms Guerin's murder at the Naas Road on June 26th, 1966.

The conviction followed a 31-day trial at the non-jury Special Criminal Court. Ward was the first person convicted in connection with the murder of the Sunday Independent journalist.

On January 18th, the Special Criminal Court refused to grant Ward leave to appeal against his conviction.
