The brother of a murder victim was given the chance of community service yesterday after being arrested with two knives outside the home of his estranged wife.

Alfie Lee (39), formerly of Moateview Drive, Coolock, a brother of Gerry Lee who was shot dead at a party, was given the option of 40 hours' community service or one month's imprisonment.

Garda Ray Keogh told Dublin District Court the defendant had called to the home of his wife on the night of August 2nd in breach of an interim barring order that had been issued a short time previously.

He refused to leave the house and was carrying two knives and a drill bit. He also became abusive to gardai.

Mr Pat Daly, defending, said the defendant was currently receiving treatment for a drink problem that had come to a head following the murder of his brother to whom he was very close.

Judge Desmond Hogan remanded the defendant to February 3rd for a community service report on three charges of having offensive weapons, breach of barring order and obstruction.
