Court action by prison officer

A prison officer in Mountjoy jail in Dublin has brought a High Court challenge to his suspension

A prison officer in Mountjoy jail in Dublin has brought a High Court challenge to his suspension. Mr Alan Garvey claims he was accused by another prison officer of injuring a prisoner in an incident last September.

Mr Garvey, of Hawthorn Drive, Portlaoise, Co Laois, was granted leave to seek orders overturning the decision to suspend him without pay. The court heard he has since been granted 75 per cent of his pay.

Ms Justice McGuinness also granted Mr Garvey an injunction which restrains the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform from withholding his full pay. The injunction is to continue for two weeks when the matter is due to return before the court.
