A couple have been rescued from a fire at a block of flats in north Belfast after a woman spotted flames half a mile away.
The man (45) and woman (41) were asleep when smoke from a chip pan filled the 12th-floor Fianna House apartment in the New Lodge area last night.
Station officer Mr Davy Ball said the brigade was alerted by a woman who phoned to say she had spotted a fire at the top of the flats.
Although the caller did not know the exact location, crews searched the area and found smoke stains above a window.
"When they reached the landing they immediately saw smoke, forced the door open and found the occupants lying totally unaware of what was going on," Mr Ball told BBC Radio Ulster.
"The people have been extremely lucky - number one in that the neighbour spotted it, and number two there was so little fat or oil in the pan that a fire had started, which she had noticed, but it didn't develop in the kitchen.
The couple were taken outside and checked by ambulance staff, but did not need hospital treatment.
