A SOUTH Dublin councillor, MS Mary Muldoon, has resigned from Fine Gael because she is "fed up" with the party's stance in favour of land rezoning in the county.

Having failed to win the council's chairmanship, Ms Muldoon decided to resign her party membership after 22 years.

Ms Muldoon, a school teacher, said her life had been made "unbearable" by the expectation of colleagues that she would vote in a particular way on rezoning and by their lack of support for her efforts to defend green belt areas.

With a county development plan review about to start, she was "scared" about what would happen to the rest of the green belt. "I also resent the fact that there are those who contribute to coffers of my party and I don't know what their vested interests are."
