Limerick gardai were yesterday investigating complaints that assassination attempts had been made on Mr Michael Kelly (45), a member of Limerick City Council, and his brother, Anthony, over the weekend.

Mr Kelly said at a meeting of the city council on Monday evening that two attempts had been made on his life over the weekend. He asked to be excused indefinitely from attending council meetings "in the interest of my safety and that of my family".

Mr Kelly, who was re-elected to the city council last June, is managing director of a security company.
