Bray Urban District Councillors voted last night in favour of a waste collection system for domestic users to be financed by a charge of £1.50 per bag. Implementation will be subject to a settlement of the current refuse collectors' strike, and the system will be reviewed in three months' time.
A "green box" kerbside recycling collection is also to be considered.
The 2 1/2-hour meeting took place while more than 300 protestors gathered outsided the town hall, singing, shouting and jeering. A public address system and cars honking their horns continuously interrupted the meeting.
The motion was passed by 10 votes to two, with Fianna Fail members Mr Michael Lawlor and Mr Pat Vance voting against.
