Fingal County Council has decided to grant planning permission for the development of houses, a hotel and a golf course at Abbeville demesne, the home of former taoiseach Charles Haughey in Kinsealy, Co Dublin.
In a statement last night, Fingal County Council said it had granted planning permission to Manor Park Homes for the provision of a tourism and leisure facility at Abbeville. Final permission for the development will be granted by the local authority in four weeks if objectors to the scheme do not appeal to An Bord Pleanála.
An Taisce had objected to elements of the proposed development at Abbeville and the organisation last night said it would consider the Fingal County Council decision.
Under the planning permission, Manor Park Homes would be allowed to develop an 18-hole golf course, a 70-bed hotel, 20 tourist houses for short-term letting and 20 private dwelling houses for sale.
The permission includes 18 pages of conditions.
In its statement, Fingal County Council said "the permission granted required extensive work to be carried out to protect the heritage and natural amenity of the existing demesne before, during and after the permitted development is undertaken".
The local authority said other uses permitted on the Abbeville site would include the development of walking trails, bowling greens and tennis facilities.
Abbeville House is not included in the development.
Mr Haughey and his family sold the Gandon mansion and the 250-acre estate to Manor Park Homes in August 2003 for a reported €45 million.
The former taoiseach continues to live in the house.
