Sligo Borough Concil has requested the Minister for the Environment, Mr Dempsey, to extend the deadline, which expired at midnight on Sunday last, for balancing the book of estimates for the coming year. Four meetings including a marathon four-hour discussion last weekend failed to find a way of bridging a £190,000 shortfall.

The county manager, Mr Hubert Kearns, has called for a £10 increase in service charges, bringing them to £100. A rise in car-parking charges from 30p to 50p an hour in the town centre and a charge of £1 per day for workers and long-stay parking in certain car-parks is also recommended.

A rate increase of 5 per cent is also being sought. A majority of councillors will vote against the proposal to increase service charges by £10.
