Coughlan follows Daly route

Ireland's Richie Coughlan is one shot off the lead after the first round of the USPGA Tour's Sony Open in Hawaii

Ireland's Richie Coughlan is one shot off the lead after the first round of the USPGA Tour's Sony Open in Hawaii. He trails 1987 Masters winner Larry Mize, Brad Faxon and John Daly, who shot a six-under-par 64 to share the lead.

After winning major championships in 1991 and 1995, Daly has been a major disappointment, failing to crack the top ten of any event over the past two seasons. Part of his problem has been his well-publicised weight problems and alcohol abuse, but he has not had a drink in nine months and has shed 40 pounds to prepare for the 2001 season.

"This is the first time I've listened to what my body needs," said Daly. "I'm taking care of myself and not listening to what everybody puts in my ear."

The former USPGA Championship and Open winner, who tied for 48th at last week's Tucson Open, had seven birdies and a bogey at the windy Waialae Country Club.
