Cork port open to public as part of city's Heritage Day

THE PORT of Cork will open its doors to the public today as part of Cork Heritage Day

THE PORT of Cork will open its doors to the public today as part of Cork Heritage Day. The rooms of the Custom House will be open to the public from 11am to 4pm, offering visitors the opportunity to view the boardroom and committee room as well as the fine collection of maritime artwork owned by the Port of Cork Company.

With the new Port of Cork city marina in place, the port is encouraging boat owners to use the facility for Cork Heritage Open Day.

Commercial manager Michael McCarthy said he was delighted to open Custom House once again to the public. “What better way to arrive in the city than by water,” Mr McCarthy said.

“We are encouraging all boat owners, if they are planning on visiting the city for Heritage Day, to use the Port of Cork city marina, which allows excellent access to all the city attractions.”

Meanwhile, Corkonians will get a chance to step back in time today when some of the city’s most historic buildings are opened in a series of guided tours and talks as part of Cork Heritage Open Day.

Lord Mayor of Cork councillor Michael O’Connell said the open day provided a unique opportunity for Corkonians to visit some of the city’s most noted buildings, which are rarely open to the public, and to explore other fascinating aspects of the city’s past.

Among the historic buildings open to the public are the Masonic Hall on Tuckey Street, which has been the home of Freemasonry in Cork since 1844, and the Unitarian church on Princes Street, the oldest documented surviving building in the city.

Other events include the screening of a film by pioneering British filmmakers Mitchell and Kenyon, who visited Cork in the early 1900s, which is being shown in the Civic Trust House on Pope’s Quay.
