Neutrogena Visibly Clear Gentle Exfoliating Wash €4.39 for 150ml

The cheapest product is also the most willing to acknowledge the enemy. This “wash” (note: not “scrub”) claims that it “cleanses deep into pores and helps clear spots” using “Microclear”, Neutrogena’s patented spot-fighting technology. They say: “With soft microbeads, it gently exfoliates dead skin cells and cleanses deep into pores removing trapped dirt, oil and make-up without over-drying your skin.” We say: Its spearmint fragrance and gel-like texture means it feels a bit like smearing toothpaste on your face.

Verdict:Routine freshness ***

Soap & Glory Greatest Scrub of All €11.95 for 125ml

Not ones for modesty when it comes to product claims, the ultra-kitsch Soap & Glory brand promises that this facial exfoliator contains “smooth-boosting spheres that pop open when you press on them!”. We didn’t notice any popping action, but we take their word for it; well, we sort of do. It’s certainly best to take their word for it when they suggest only applying “a pea-sized splodge” – anything more and even the oiliest of cheeks will take on the texture of a desert brush after a particularly long drought.

Verdict:Gritty and cute ****

Nip + Fab Scrub Fix €5.30 for 50ml

This “facial polish” describes itself as an instant beauty fix made simple in the shape of a “miracle scrub” that will “refine, brighten and renew”, all apparently thanks to an abrasive bevy of micro-particles, salicylic acid and bamboo. It smells kind of industrial. Indeed, if you want your face to take on the nostalgic scent of the mahogany diningroom sideboard on which you spent your childhood Saturdays smearing actual polish, then this is the exfoliant for you.

Verdict: More nip than fab ***

Boots No 7 Total Renewal Micro-dermabrasion €14.95 for 75ml

Neutrogena has “microbeads” and Nip + Fab has its “micro-particles”. Boots No 7, however, boasts “micro-crystals”, which may be why it costs more. It’s also the only one that claims on the label to be hypoallergenic. More grainy than gritty, Boots No 7 declares it will improve appearance, tone, texture and radiance from the very first use. We can vouch for the radiance bit, and this is a still a reasonable price – if you’re a believer.

Verdict:Crystalline class ****
