Are you a saver or a spender?I try to be a saver, but unfortunately it goes very quickly. At the moment it all goes in the right direction, but the savings are needed. The story of my financial life.

Do you shop around for better value?I always like to benchmark my spending and want to know if something is cheap or expensive, but quality is always good value.

What has been your most extravagant purchase ever and how much did it cost?I think it was my Cannondale F1000 mountain bike with spengle carbon rims and the whole circus. I purchased it in 1997 when I was still single – it was approximately 6,000 Dutch Guilders (€2,800). It is still in mint condition.

What purchase have you made that you consider the best value for money?I bought a house in a new project (2005 Stad of de Zon — City of the Sun). The goal of the project was to build homes that always point to the sun so that the homes use solar power. The project was the first to become carbon neutral as well as the largest photovoltaic neighbourhood. So far the solar system has generated more energy than we can consume; this gives me a healthy feeling knowing that I contribute to a better environment.

Have you ever crossed the Border to shop?I try to do all my shopping as close to home as possible, but clothing and shoes are a mission impossible for me as my sizes are not easy to get. If I am in Holland, I do my shopping for clothes there.

Do you haggle over prices?Never. I don't like haggling at all; people should charge what they need. If I have the feeling that a product has the right price, I will buy it without the whole ritual of haggling.

Has the recession changed your spending habits? Not really, I always spend what I need to spend, providing it's within my budget.

Do you invest in shares? No, not at the moment, but maybe in a later stage of my life.

Cash or card?I use both for different reasons- card is easy for Internet purchases, parking and business. Cash is good for pocket money, small purchases and shopping on a budget.

What was the last thing you bought and was it good value for money?Four new tyres for my car – they cost €320. I went into the garage without an appointment and I was in and out in 30 minutes with good advice, a free cup of coffee, shortbread and an interesting chat.

Have you ever successfully saved up for a relatively big purchase?Yes – my Cannondale mountain bike.

Are you a gambler and if so have you ever had a big win?I am not a gambler; my only gambling moment was at the dogs. I did not have clue what to place a bet on. It was a fun night, even if I did lose a few euros!

Is money important to you?It is very important to have some to provide for myself and my family with a good quality of life and future. More and more you need to be self-providing in terms of healthcare, pensions and education. That said, I am not driven by money.

How much money do you have on you now?I have €21.35 in my wallet at the moment.
