A CONSULTANT gynaecologist who works with the HSE looking after public patients, and who failed to declare his income from private patients or from houses he had rented out, pleaded guilty to tax offences yesterday and will be sentenced later this year.
Cavan Circuit Court was yesterday told by Gerard Cosgrave, inspector of taxes, that the case of Dr Ahmed Hussain came to light after it was noticed that while he was registered for tax in relation to HSE work, he was not registered for tax on other income.
Details of payments made to him by private medical insurance companies were being sent to the Revenue Commissioners and it was noticed there was a gap between his tax returns compared with these records.
Judge John O’Hagan heard that, when confronted, Dr Hussain was co-operative and had handed over all his records.
Mr Cosgrave accepted that, according to bank statements for Dr Hussain, there had not been any attempt to conceal the income. While the consultant has since paid just under €1 million in settlement, there is a dispute before the courts in relation to tax liabilities for more recent years.
Dr Hussain, Carrickane, Cavan, pleaded guilty to three sample charges. The court heard the Revenue investigation was for the years 1999 to 2007 and undeclared income totalling €1.9 million was involved.
